This Mortal Coil Emily Suvada Books

Holy expletive, Batman! This book!! This book is smart. It made me feel smarter after reading it. This is the kind of book you brag about reading. I feel like I could walk into a genetics or coding conference, full of the brightest people in their fields, and say "Oh, you're working on world changing research? That's cool and all, but have you read This Mortal Coil?" and then dazzle them with a summary of the amazing plot, characters, and science. But the best part about Emily Suvada's writing is that, while brilliant and sophisticated, is also accessible. You do not need a background in science or coding to understand or enjoy this book. Emily somehow takes these really complex ideas and translates them into readable, digestible, believable ideas (without sacrificing the complexity that make them so cool and interesting in the first place). And then, she takes these ideas and gives them to these vibrant characters who feel like they didn't just come out of Emily's head, but rather have always existed, fully formed, and were just waiting for her to channel their story to the rest of us. And how glad I am that she did! Everything is so well thought out. If there are holes in the plot, then they are strategically placed, waiting to trip you on purpose. Read this book. The only downside to it is that it ends, making me wait impatiently for the rest of the series.

This Mortal Coil Emily Suvada Books Reviews

* Originally posted to my blog, {Books She Reads}. Portions of this review have been modified*

This Mortal Coil is brilliant science fiction! Emily Suvada's post-apocalyptic, dystopian novel has consistent suspense that will keep you turning the pages from beginning to end. It became pretty obvious early on that Suvada knows the workings of DNA and code in order to bring This Mortal Coil to life. Emily Suvada has a brilliant mind, and it shines through on every page of This Mortal Coil.

Told exclusively from the point of view of Catarina, I was brought into a world that allows genetics and technology to work alongside each other. What if you could "dress up" your DNA by downloading an app? Want pink hair? done. Want scales for skin? done. Want to be six inches taller? done. Have a broken bone? a virus? a gunshot wound? it's a simple download and your healing at an accelerated rate. Hackers are no longer limited to computers and phones, they can hack the genes of any human with a  panel. All of this is explored in a world that has been drastically changed due to a prehistoric biological virus that causes those who are infected to explode. A virus that mutates faster than a vaccine can be coded.

I have so many notes on the characters and workings of this book. I love it when I read a science fiction or fantasy novel that has been so well constructed that I have pages of notes to keep it all organized. I realize now, as I am writing this, that sounds scary. It's not. This is just one of my quirks of being a book reviewer. You don't HAVE to keep notes in order to understand and keep up. Emily Suvada does an excellent job of explaining how everything works and provides reminders in all the right places.

My only negative is all of the information that was thrown at me in the last chunk of the book with no explanations to follow. It was expected, I knew this was a trilogy going into it but it doesn't lessen the sting of a cliff-hanger. Good news is that book two, This Cruel Design, is out so you can binge them both (like I did) but we will still need to wait for book three, which won't be released until sometime in late 2019 (I am assuming. fingers crossed for sooner).

If you're in the mood for a suspenseful, post-apocalyptic science fiction with a dash of romance, you need to pick up a copy of This Mortal Coil. You might want to go ahead and pick up a copy of This Cruel Design as well, you're going to want it.
This book had a lot of potential and I was hooked from the first chapter. The plot is novel for YA and Cat makes for a relatable heroine. I was intrigued to explore sci fi based around genetic modification and initially it seemed that the story was in capable hands. However, as I read on my heart sank. What started as a smart postapocalyptic exploration of what makes us human quickly devolved into an overwrought teen romance with a lot of overly complicated pseudo-science thrown in. Philosophical questions raised by the concept of controlling your own genetic makeup and an epidemic causing you to cannibalize others to survive are largely ignored, which feels like a missed opportunity.
Bravo, Emily Suvada!! I found myself fully immersed in the story & the characters, not wanting to put it down until I turned the very last page! Emily Suvada has some powerful writing skills, because she made me believe in Cat and Cole and their shared mission to save the world. I was completely spell bound from the start! There are so many tension filled moments, but in the best way! Cat is a wonderful, strong, smart, and brave young lady, a virtual little powerhouse. She has so much on her plate to be so young. She doesn't sit around feeling sorry for herself though! Her relationship with Cole was really endearing, and I really love them as a team. I really wanted them to get together from the moment they met in the story, and how they bring each other's vulnerabilities to the surface. Only together are they truly made whole! The story itself is so original! I love the way she put a new spin on the zombie thing with the Lurkers and the Wrath. I was also pleasantly surprised that all the talk about genes, tech, etc. didn't go over my head. She really did a phenomenal job explaining all of it in a way that not only made perfect sense, but also taught me a lot! There's just so much depth to this whole story, and I can't wait to read the next book to see how everything turns out! I'm already missing Cat's world terribly! (October is too far away now!)
P.S. This would be great to listen to in the audio book version. It would make an extremely entertaining movie as well! I can even visualize who would play each character!
