Oh my holy cuteness! What an adorable read with a droolable boy (gah... Justin, you are mine!) and a wonderful book for teens. (And YA old lady fans like me :))

First... LOVE THIS COVER! It's adorable, and sets the tone up immediately. It's a light and fun book, with its doses of deep and dark, all in the right moments that leave you going "awww" in a cute way, and "awww" in a that's-so-sad way.

Lucy is a cute narrator. The perfect 16 year old who is making mistakes, falling in love, battling with her parents, and trying to stand out in a crowd that she feels is swallowing her up. But she's a cutie, with inner monologue that makes me laugh and leaves me rooting for her to have her moment.

Justin is totally cute and amazing, and he's supposed to come off as a jerk to our leading lady at first, but honestly my hubby is ten times worse, so I thought he was adorbs, lol! He's the typical popular guy with the perfect abs, eyes, and girlfriend, but his personality is so not typical. SPOILER ALERT! Love a guy who wants to save himself. Thank you Lizzy for writing someone different!

Loved the painting during the summer. Loved Alex! Oh my gosh, give me an Alex book please!!!! He was so darn cute. And I loved that Lucy was surrounded by guys in this job, but only one made her heart thump ;) They were all really decent guys too. You have the typical scumbag, but there were a lot of other really lovable boys.

I use the word love a lot. Can you tell I just loved this???

Wonderful easy read, cute YA story, and adorable characters. I can't wait for others to read it so I can chat about it nonstop (and fight for Justin ;))

Great debut, Lizzy. Can't wait to see more.

Effortless With You Lizzy Charles 9780615876252 Books Reviews

Pros Lucy's character evolution; Justin Marshall; nod to Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice; well fleshed out characters; easy read; uplifting.
Cons None.

**REVIEW CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS**

The current trend in YA are books seems to be a focus on suicide and terminal illness—not the most uplifting topics. While I have nothing against the heavy stuff, every so often I need a break. I need something uplifting and fun. I found that in Effortless With You.

At first, I didn’t know what to make of Lucy. She struck me as a bit self-centered, more than a little naïve, and sporting a major attitude. I’ve read a lot of reviews on here and Goodreads where readers said they couldn’t stand the first half of this book and didn’t like Lucy. My advice hang in there. It’s worth it and you’ll be glad you did. You’ll soon come to appreciate what the author was trying to accomplish and that’s a dramatic character arc. Lucy has to be a bit imperfect in the beginning in order to grow as the novel progresses. And grow she does…

When we first meet Lucy, the way she sees others is very skewed and we get the sense that this girl is off kilter but at first we’re not entirely sure why. For starters, her best friend is a real piece of work, something that’s evident from the moment we meet her. At first I wondered what Lucy was doing with this girl but we soon learn why she’s so dependent on Marissa—she views this girl as her lifeline and Marissa, being the insecure bitch that she is, takes full advantage of Lucy’s dependency.

Lucy quits basketball after her freshman year because of intense bullying. As a freshman phenom, she took a senior’s coveted spot on the team, which led to a lot of hatred and physical and emotional abuse—she’s slammed against lockers and publicly ridiculed, among other things. Her grades suffered and she took to eating lunch in the janitor’s closet, where she closed in on herself. She cuts off her friends and her family. She changes, as in a 180-degree change. This is the catalyst for Lucy’s downward spiral. We don’t need the details, we just need to know it happened and based on the clues, it was brutal.

Marissa, who obviously needed a new punching bag to make herself feel superior, found Lucy in the closet and “rescued” her. She found the perfect candidate in Lucy, who was close to rock bottom. So this is how we meet Lucy—when she’s at the mercy of Marissa and heavily influenced by this girl. Lucy is Marissa’s whipping girl and Marissa does everything possible to keep Lucy down, only Lucy doesn’t see it. She thinks Marissa cares about her and is helping her. The author does a great job weaving in hints regarding this abusive relationship, namely when it comes to Lucy’s self-esteem and her body image. Her clothing is all selected by Marissa, the items chosen in an attempt to make her appear passable when the truth is, Lucy has a great body. Then we have her boyfriend, Zach, who the reader will peg right off as a total jerk but Lucy sees what she wants to see. She sees perfection and thinks he’s really into her. She makes excuses for him when he stands her up and treats her like garbage. She doesn’t see that he’s fooling around with Marissa behind her back the entire time or that this was Marissa’s plan all along.

While she sees Zach as perfect, she dismisses senior and all-around good guy Justin Marshall as a class A jerk. (Justin is a really lovely character and very well fleshed out.) Still, there are glimmers of hope. Despite her misguided opinion of Justin, Lucy’s isn’t happy with Marissa’s plans to seduce him. Justin already has a steady girlfriend named Jennifer who Lucy sees as perfect—tall, blonde, Senior Class President, gorgeous—and who by all accounts is a good person.

Lucy’s home life isn’t much better. Her relationship with her parents is tense and while her mother is a train wreck, we only see her through Lucy’s eyes. We gradually learn that her mother suffers from depression (and at times seems to display some Asperger’s traits). Lucy’s alienation from her parents stems from her recent change, a lack of communication, and Lucy’s inability to confide in her mother. For example, she’s unable to tell her parents why she quit basketball, a sport she both loves and excels at, due to her mother’s depression and the fact she’s worried it will set her off again. Lucy’s memories of her mother aren’t positive and Lucy blames herself—her very birth. So Lucy protects her mother and in turn, hurts herself in the process.

Just as the bullying turned Lucy into Marissa’s punching bag, it’s her parents insistence she get a summer job that saves her. She ends up working for Justin’s painting company where she’s surrounded by a group of positive role models, namely Justin and his cousin, Alex. Here’s where the astute reader will see parallels to Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. Justin is Mr. Darcy and Lucy is Lizzie Bennett. I won’t go into detail as I don’t want to spoil it as it’s cleverly done.

During her summer working for Justin, we see Lucy gradually start to change. Justin pushes her buttons and she in turn starts to see things as they truly are and her “friendship” with Marissa finally starts to unravel. Marissa uses her in a plot to seduce the savvy Justin—he’s nobody’s fool—and Lucy privately balks at how Marissa talks to her. She secretly witnesses Marissa bullying a young girl and questions her loyalty to this horrible person. She questions why she didn’t stand up to her when she herself was the victim of bullying. She later catches Marissa and Zach together, an event which finally frees her from Marissa’s control and forces her to stand on her own two feet. She realizes she doesn’t know who she is and that’s when we see the real Lucy emerge.

Lucy gradually realizes she’s in love with Justin (ala Lizzie and Mr. Darcy), who she thought just wanted to be friends, and that her mother really does love her even if she can’t always show it. Some of the best scenes include Lucy telling Marissa off at a party, Lucy revealing her true feelings to Justin, and a revelation by Justin’s girlfriend (Jennifer) which is quite sweet.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lucy’s journey and the author left me wanting more and that’s always a good thing. If you’re looking for an enjoyable YA contemporary romance with interesting characters and a clever nod to Jane Austen, I highly recommend this book.
I picked up EFFORTLESS WITH YOU during a 99cents sale at one day, figuring that even though romance books aren't usually my thing, this one looked cute and could be an easy, light read. Well, it was an easy read, because it was written so well and flowed nicely, but it wasn't all light and fluffy like I expected. I'm really glad I saw the sale and grabbed this book and gave it a chance!

On the one hand, EFFORTLESS WITH YOU is your typical romance story - whether it's YA or adult - and includes many of the usual romance tropes girl who doesn't know how attractive she is, boy who's gorgeous beyond belief and has an attitude to match, a developing relationship between the two that starts as dislike/fighting and evolves to something more, and the constant push-pull of "s/he likes me, no s/he hates me, no s/he likes me, no..." -- you get the idea! But what makes for a good romance, even with all these typical tropes, is, in my opinion, all about the characters. Sometimes you can read a book that has a good story, but if you don't connect to the characters, it's not going to get very high marks, right? Well, the characters - not just Lucy and Justin, but supporting characters too - are what really made this book a 4-star read for me.

Ms. Charles writes like a pro, and I thought she did a great job with the dialogue between characters, which I think would be the hardest part about writing a book. We are only in Lucy's head for this story, which made for some frustration and anticipation as we wonder right along with Lucy just how Justin feels about her. Their banter was really witty and enjoyable to read. I loved when they were on the page together.

What I wasn't expecting was the detailed story of Lucy's relationship with her parents and little brother, and this aspect of the story is another reason this was a 4-star read for me. Often your typical romance stories are heavy on the primary relationship and light on everything else, but EFFORTLESS wasn't like that. We have a front-row seat in Lucy's struggle to be her own person, to figure out who that person is, and to understand and empathize and get along with her mother. Without spoilers, I'll just say I loved that the title refers to something very different than you initially expect!

I highly recommend EFFORTLESS for any YA romance fan, and I look forward to reading PERFECTLY MESSY next!
