If you like Stieg Larsson or Nele Neuhaus, you will love this book! It is fast paced, has unusual and unique character development and unexpected twists. It does have some violence but it all fits the character of the book. I absolutely loved it. I was disappointed to see it is Mr. Soderberg's first book! I was so looking forward to reading another by this very talented writer. I hope he continues to create intriguing and intricate novels.

I found it boring and confusing
The plot was a little convoluted, but the action and the characters were great. Took me a little while to keep all the characters straight. But once I really got into the story I couldn't put it down. I like that the ending left room for follow ups.
It's believable. It holds your interest and you find yourself believing that the characters really do live across the street and down the road, right under your nose and you don't even see it! Use the character list in the front of the book......so you can keep up with which side they are on.
Normally a book with lots of characters causes difficulty; The Andalucian Friend has many characters from many different lands and these characters have hugely different backgrounds and value systems but the book is incredibly well written and grips the reader from the start.. I loved it and would strongly recommend it to anyone whatever their reading taste. It is a thriller full of intrigue. There is mystery as to some of the characters and there is romance for those whose interest lies in that area. I cannot wait for the second book.

I had read a review on this book in a magazine that this book by a new author was the next "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". I pre-ordered it based on the author being Sweden's 'next best thing'. I started this book and it took me over 2 months to finish it; not the usual one week when a book is so wonderful - this one wasn't. I have been to Sweden before so I am aware of the areas that it takes place in (which could be distracting for those who have no idea where this author is sending them) but the violence, the gore, the worthless beatings/killings, just made no sense to me - it seemed so gratuitous. The worst part is there were so many events that happened at the end that were not explained, and the book really leaves you hanging on what happens to these people. It simply does not tie any of the loose ends up, and really doesn't explain why all these things happened. I don't know if the author is planning a sequel but this is honestly one of those books that I feel was a complete waste of money.
Unlike so many thrillers that have super-human characters and world threatening plots, this story captivates because the reader can see themselves in the story. Sophie is so real and we can see how the various characters can influence and massively upset her life with such ease to serve their own purposes.

I enjoyed the Swedish locations and the authors wonderful but simple descriptions of places and weather conditions. Very understated and readable. Even the cop Lars is made sympathetic by the writer. He does a fantastic job of developing all of the major characters and we want to read their story.
